Skipton all set for exciting Yorkshire Day celebrations filled with county pride, tradition and community spirit
Skipton is gearing up for a special day of Yorkshire-themed celebrations filled with county pride, tradition and community spirit.
Yorkshire Day returns on Saturday (August 1st) and Skipton, located right in the heart of ‘God’s Own County’, is preparing to host a whole series of events to mark the occasion.
Skipton BID is all set to deliver its annual celebration on the Canal Basin and the adjacent Coach Street Car Park – with a range of free activities across the day including:
- Circus Tricks Workshops – from 10.30am
- Morris Dancers – 11am
- Yorkshire Day Proclamation – 11.50am
- Free Family Activities – 10am – 4pm
- Live Music – 12pm – 7pm
There will also be different food and drinks on offer throughout the day, with the celebrations extending into the evening for the first time.
Sarah Howsen, Skipton BID Manager, said: “It’s nearly here! We’re so excited to bring the Yorkshire-themed fun back into Skipton this weekend.
“We’ve got a whole host of free family-friendly fun on offer across the day, so don’t miss out and come see us.
“Skipton is going to be a hive of Yorkshire Day celebrations over the weekend, so what better place to commemorate our amazing county?!”
Alongside the Skipton BID event, there’s plenty more happening in the town centre across both the day and weekend.
If you’ve got your exploring hat on, why not grab a trail sheet and map for either the Woolly Sheep Trail or the Buzzing Skipton Trail and head out on a local adventure with a chance of winning some great prizes.
The Great Yorkshire Circus is in town from July 29th until August 2nd. Step right up for this brand new, all-human production harking back to the golden age of circus magic.
Ray Bubbles returns to bring three of his Ultimate Bubble Shows to Skipton Town Hall on Saturday from 11am, 1.30pm and 3.30pm. Prepare to be amazed as Ray creates a volcano bubble, a soap bubble carousel and even a tornado inside a bubble!
If history is your thing, Skipton is set to play host to a number of different guided tours to really get you into the Yorkshire mood…
Join the ‘Pooey Peasant’s Guide to Stinkin’ Skipton – perfect for families of Horrible Histories lovers – at either 11am or 3pm when Smelda Brown will guide you around Skipton’s smelliest spots to learn about what our town was really like back in the day. Or, if you’re looking for something a bit spookier, join the ghoulish ‘Butcher’ for the Skipton Ghost Tour at 6.30pm or 8pm to learn more about kings, queens, witches, ghosts and more.
Raikes Road Burial Ground is also set to host an open day on August 1st with guided talks at 11.15am and 2pm to uncover stories, traditions and hidden history within the site.
Craven Arts will celebrate the work of David Hockney by hosting a workshop from 10am – 12pm offering the chance to create a vibrant, mixed media landscape in the style of the late painter and printmaker.
